Today in Science, Year 5 had the chance to measure forces using a newton meter.  They measured everything from the prize box to their own bags!

Year 5 had a great time today being visited by John Malam.  They learnt all about Queen Elizabeth II and wrote a letter to the Queen as well.

Internet Safety Week , by Miss Nuttall

For Internet Saftey Week, we looked at whether comments you make online can ever be deleted.  We wrote a comment on a piece of paper and then stuck it on to our comment wall.  At the end of the lesson we tried to take the comments off the wall, and found that no matter how much we tried there was always a mark left.  We also created how to be safe on the internet posters.

Our debate on whether to have a class pet or not..., by Miss Nuttall

In English we have been busy with our persuasive writing.  The question we were looking at was, should we have a class pet or not?  The class were split in to for and against groups.  They researched their reasons for and against having a class pet.  We then arranged a debate where they could express their views.  There were some well researched arguments put forward from both sides, however in the end the winners were the against team.  Here are some pictures of our debate.

Today the Canal and River Trust came into our school. We were canal and river explorers, finding the dangers that we could see near the canal. We learnt about the dangers we could face, how to avoid them and what to do if we end up in any danger in water.

We had a fantastic day out and learnt lots about the Vikings. We enjoyed workshops on Viking stories and medicine. Afterwards, we went digging to find out what we could discover about the Vikings from what they had left.

5J have worked hard to learn their lines and verses to recite from Taylor Swift's Love Story. The song is all about the twists and turns in the story of Romeo and Juliet. The children have either recited as a poem, rap or song. Please watch them.

The Alps- Tectonic Plates, by Miss Mulkeen

The Alps were formed around 30 million years ago, when two tectonic plates collided. As the two plates pushed on each other, the sediment buckled and the Alps were formed. Today we showed how this happened representing the Earth’s layers with four colours of salt dough and two piles to represent the two tectonic plates.

Jodrell Bank!, by Mr Jolly

On Wednesday 15th February, Year 5 travelled to Macclesfield to the site of Jodrell Bank, the 3rd largest working satellite in the world. At the time of opening, 60 years ago, it was the largest. 

We had two workshops: Desitnation Space and Inflatable Planetarium. In the Destination Space one we looked at Tim Peake's mission and what astronauts get up to on the International Space Station. At the Inflatable Planetarium we went inside a huge bubble and saw what the sky was going to be like that evening as what we can see changes every night.

Year 5 Pirate Science Week , by Mr Jolly

During Science week Year 5 completed a number of challenges:

  • Pirate quiz workshop
  • Floatation challnge - can the children make their boat to float?
  • Making a scaled version of our Solar System on the playground -  distance apart 
  • Making a scaled version of our Solar System in the classroom -  size of the planets
  • Constellation making and discovering

Does the Sun move across the sky?, by Mr Jolly

Mr Jolly went on holiday and he saw the sun move across the sky. He told Miss Mulkeen, she initially disagreed, but she was confused by what he had seen.

5J researched what actually happened and presented their findings back to the rest of the class. They then made a video to explain what Mr Jolly had seen.
