One workshop was based on working scientifically. Firstly, we explored stereotypes of what a scientist looked like or did and debunked this. Afterwards we went through some areas of what a scientist does: predict, question, observe and evaluate.

The other workshop explored proving that gas exists and that is all around us, as it is harder to observe and see it in comparison to solids and liquids.

World Book Day in 4J - March 22, by Mr Jolly

Date: 7th Mar 2022 @ 4:45pm

On Friday, Year 4 caught up with the rest of the school and we had our World Book Day celebrations.  We started the day with some drama games to get us into working in groups and building our confidence to speak and act. Mrs Freeman gave Year 4 the book, "Voices in the Park," by Anthony Browne. This book is about four gorillas, a mother, a father,a son and a daughter from different backgrounds. We had lots of fun looking at  pictures of the characters and deciding what kind of person they would be, what they would say, how they would talk. We created our own little scenes and acted them out, before we even read the book. Well done 4J, I was very impressed with your group work today. You worked co-operatively and listened realy ell to each other.

Your costumes as always were fantastic-thanks to parents and carers!

4J visit M6 Theatre, by Mr Jolly

Date: 16th Nov 2021 @ 3:45pm

Today, Tuesday 16th November, 4J visited M6 Theatre to have their first linking schools meeting with St Joseph’s (Heywood). First, they were split into two groups, cuckoos and hedgehogs. In these groups, they then met a randomly assigned partner to work with throughout the day. After the introductions and some games, the two groups came together and watched a production called Mavis Sparkles.

It was the story of a cleaner with an extraordinary story to tell. Mavis was on a journey north to see nature’s biggest light show with her own eyes. With a cleaning trolley full of secrets and surprises, and a little help from Spike the hedgehog, Mavis moved ever closer to making her dream come true. It featured a heart-warming mix of illusion, animation and captivating performance. This life-affirming production inspired us all to think about being brave, dust away doubts and reach for the stars!

After lunch, they were split into their two groups and worked on freeze framing feelings, some of which were experienced during the performance. The afternoon concluded with a group freeze frame of people’s wishes for the world including: ending homelessness, being kinder to the environment and stopping violence.

They were extremely well behaved and I know 4J are looking forward to meeting Class 9 again both at St Peter’s and when visiting St Joseph’s at some point in the Spring term.

Catalyst Science Museum, by Mr Jolly

Date: 16th Sep 2021 @ 2:41pm

Today, 16/9/21, Year 4 visited the Catalyst Science Musemum in Widnes.

In the morning, we attended the first of two work shops; it was on fair testing and working scientifically. We explored what a scientist looked like and what they do - work safely, oberserve, mkae predictions and then test fair, chaning only one small thing.

Before lunch, we had the opprutninty to explore the rest of the mseum and we really enjoyed the interaction elements on the ground floor. Here we could pretend to be a weather reporter using a green screen and an auto cue, catch cloths from a vaccum and find out which parts of the body were the warmest using a heat map.

After lunch, we had the second workshop which was called glorious gases. Here we used the knoweldge we had learnt last week in Science to sort items into solids, liquids and gases. After this, we made a rainbow using air pressure, made a fire entiguisher using bicabinate of soda and vinegar and finally made a vacuum and observed an even bigger one.

Recently 4J have been studying the book 'Mr Stink' by David Walliams in which a girl, named Chloe Crumb in the main character. She doesn't get on with her mum or younger sister but has a great affinity to a homeless character called Mr Stink and a shopkeeper named Raj. On Friday 21st May, everyone in 4J wrote a diary entry for Chloe. They were highly entertaining and the writing was of a high standard. Today, Thursday 27th May, they read their diary entries aloud to the rest of the class.
