Computing- digital music, by Mrs Bradley

This half term, Year 2 have been learning about digital music in Computing. The children began by listening to different pieces of music designed to represent planets and their characteristics, such as calm, mysterious, or turbulent. They discussed how the music made them feel and thought of descriptive words to match the different sounds and moods.

The children then used Chrome Music Lab to explore how music can be created digitally. Using shapes and patterns, they experimented with creating their own musical sounds and enjoyed discovering how different choices could change the rhythm, pitch, and mood of the music.

Year 2 had a lovely visit from Lucy at Nelson Street Church. The children learnt about the story of Book of Jonah and the big fish, exploring the important message behind the story — that we should listen to God, make good choices, and understand that forgiveness and second chances are important.

After hearing the story, the children took part in some fun activities. First, they drew pictures to match different parts of the story, and then they designed their own wristbands to take home as a reminder of what they had learnt.

The session began in the hall, where the children had plenty of space to move freely as they explored the different ways their bodies can move. It started with an imaginative story about Freddy Teddy and Mollie the Cat going on a morning walk, during which the children acted out movements such as stretching, walking, jumping, and bending. This playful introduction helped them become more aware of their physical abilities in an engaging and enjoyable way. As the session continued, the children were encouraged to reflect on how special and unique their bodies are, recognising them as wonderful, God-given gifts.

This half term, Year 2 have been learning about the artist Nick Gustafson and have been practising sketching and shading techniques through drawings of minibeasts. Well done year 2!

Year 2 have been learning about fractions this week and took part in practical activities using cubes and playdough to find equal amounts. They also produced some wonderful work in their books on one half, one quarter and one third.

Exploring Teen Numbers, by Mrs Perry

In Reception, the children have been learning about teen numbers through simple games. We used a egg box as a ten frame by filling it with ten pon-poms so children can see a full ten. Then, extra pom-poms are added to show numbers like 11 or 15 as “ten and some more.” Playing games, such as rolling a dice and adding more objects, helped children understand teen numbers in a fun and practical way.

Year 2 have been learning about measuring this half term and this week we looked at volume and capacity. The children enjoyed measuring amounts of liquids and comparing them.

Year 2 have had a very busy half term in Design and Technology, learning all about puppets and developing their sewing skills. They carefully designed and created their own animal-themed hand puppets, showing great creativity and enthusiasm throughout the project.

Year 1 had a fantastic time at the National Emergency Services Museum! We were able to learn lots of new and interesting information about the Great Fire of London. The children asked some excellent questions and had a super fun time.

Today, we were delighted to welcome Lucy from Nelson Street Church. The children took part in a fun and engaging craft workshop, where they revisited the Easter story together.

After discussing the key events, the children created their own Easter symbols using playdough, showing great creativity and understanding. They then made paper Easter eggs, decorating them with images to represent different parts of the story.

It was a lovely, hands-on way for the children to explore the meaning of Easter while enjoying a variety of creative activities.

World Book Day Celebrations, by Miss Healey

We have had the best time celebrating World Book Day the past couple of weeks! We looked amazing in our costumes and also had a super time with our guest author Ian Bland. He was extremely funny and helped us write some amazing poetry of our own!

Today we were delighted to welcome the wonderful poet Ian Bland to our school. He performed and shared some of his fantastic poetry with the children before working with each year group to help them create their own poems.

The day was filled with creativity and laughter, and the children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to explore poetry in such an engaging way. To finish the day, many pupils proudly showcased their poems during a special assembly. It was a fantastic experience for everyone involved.

Year 1 had a fantastic day celebrating World Book Day! They all made a fantastic effort with their costumes and really enjoyed working out who all the teachers were in the Masked Reader. 

They also practiced their drawing skills and joined in a draw-along to create a very hungry caterpillar!

Year 2 Science- Outdoor learning- Microhabitats, by Mrs Bradley

This half term in Science, we are exploring habitats. This week, the children investigated the microhabitats they could find around the school grounds and discussed the different creatures that might live in them.

They then created their own microhabitats, which we placed outside. We are looking forward to revisiting them next week to see whether any minibeasts have made themselves at home! 🐞🌿

Reverend Pam joined us for a wonderful collective worship focused on this half term’s core value of perseverance. She shared the Bible story of Peter walking on water, highlighting how he showed perseverance in the face of difficulty. The children reflected on how we can learn from this story and demonstrate perseverance in our everyday lives.

This half term, Year 2 have been learning about instructions in English. They explored the key features of instructional writing and how to write clear, step-by-step instructions. To finish the unit, the children followed a set of instructions to make their own delicious jam tarts.

We had a wonderful visit this morning, from the Shades from the Diocese. Their theme this year is 'Standing firm in power and pride. Standing firm on God's word and celebrate that we are all uniquely made in the image and likeness of God. Jesus stood firm in truth and justice, showing us how to live boldly, faithfully and in community with one another. We celebrate the stories of hope and courage, shining God's light with our Christian faith being the catalyst to lasting change.'

A Fantastic Visit from 'Shades' - Black History, by Mrs Perry

We were delighted to welcome the Shades Team into school to lead a special collective worship celebrating Black history. Through engaging stories, music and thoughtful discussion, the children learned about inspirational Black figures and the important contributions they have made to our world. The session encouraged curiosity, respect and reflection, helping pupils to understand the value of diversity and the importance of treating everyone with kindness and fairness. It was a meaningful and uplifting experience enjoyed by children and staff alike.

This half term, our computing topic is Robot Algorithms. This week, pupils have been using algorithms to program sequences on a floor robot. Working with a partner, they created different algorithms and then tested them by directing their floor robot around a picture map. They throughly enjoyed using the bee- bots. 

Year 2 Art- Patterns around every corner, by Mrs Bradley

In our recent art lesson, we introduced our new topic by exploring patterns found all around us. The children discussed patterns they could spot in our school environment and thought about how these could inspire their artwork. We then went outside to investigate further, using a range of materials to create textured rubbings from different surfaces. Afterwards, we shared and discussed our work, reflecting on what we found easy and what we found more challenging during the process. This hands-on lesson encouraged observation, creativity, and thoughtful discussion. Well done year 2, an excellent start to this topic.
